For MsKathy on her birthday
The third night Rosalie came back to their room with an aching shoulder after the workout the drill instructor had given her. She pulled off her t-shirt and grimaced in pain. Alice gave her a sympathetic look and got up to help her as she reached across Rose's chest to pull at the muscles in her neck and shoulder.
"Let me," she offered, gently pulling away Rose's hand. She warmed and pulled the muscles as Rose had done to her when she helped Alice after the hand-to-hand combat last month, when she'd inadvertently broken Alice's shoulder during training. Alice stood in front of her as she rubbed the pain away and Rose craned her neck to one side, sighing with relief.
"That feels great," she said with a smile, her eyes half closed and sleepy.
Alice's touch slowly became less and less hard. Her hands stopped worrying the sore muscles and soon were just gently rubbing the skin. When Rose did not complain the rubbing became stroking caresses. Alice grew a little more brave when Rosalie became utterly still under her touch. The therapeutic massage forgotten, Alice let her fingers drift softly over the planes and contours of Rose's shoulder and chest. Rosalie's smile faded, but she didn't pull away. She was entranced. Alice stepped closer to her, touching her lightly and Rosalie reached for her, barely holding her at the waist. She was afraid if she did anything she might break the spell they were falling under and she didn't want Alice to stop.
Taking her feather-light embrace as encouragement, Alice stepped closer, turning her cheek to rest against Rose's chest. She was still warm from the exertion of her workout. She smelled clean, though, like heather and leaves. Alice lifted her face and slowly nuzzled her nose against Rosalie's neck.
Rosalie closed her hands over Alice's ribs, caressing her in return, rubbing up and down with a soft touch and lowered her cheek against Alice's head. Alice lifted her face and looked at her with the same expectant look Rose had seen the night before, but she understood it now. Rosalie leaned toward her a little, just to make sure this was really what Alice wanted.
Alice did not pull away.
Rosalie looked at her once again with contentment and the barest twinkle of surprise in her eyes, and kissed her, her lips touching Alice's in a tender caress that grew more sure of itself when Alice slid her hands over Rose's shoulders and returned the kiss.
Rose could not believe what was happening. She remembered all the times Alice had spoken of her ex. It made Rose doubt she was really awake. She held Alice in her arms, but pulled away to see her, to be sure it was really Alice kissing her and not some bizarre aberration of reality.
Before Rose's doubt could grow, though, Alice quickly wrapped one arm around her neck and pushed her other hand into her hair, going on tip-toe and kissed her passionately, driving away whatever doubts Rose had.
Any notion Rosalie might have had thinking about what was happening between them disappeared like mist. Her hands slid down to Alice's hips, pulling her tightly against her own.
When Alice knew Rose would not question her intentions again, she leaned back to see Rose's eyes. "Maybe we could do more tonight than just sleep," she whispered, her southern drawl becoming a purr. It wasn't a suggestion, though her choice of words made it seem so. Alice's fingers massaged the nape of Rose's neck. Her body moved enticingly in Rose's arms.
Rosalie smiled in rare delight, stepping forward without releasing her, maneuvering Alice backwards onto the bed. Rose kissed Alice again as she followed her down onto the blankets.
